In today's lesson we are going to be discussing, 5 tips that will help you to pass summary writting for WAEC and NECO 2021. It obvious, that many student don't understand the concept behind summary writting, which i know that reading this will really help you.
A summary is a short account or statement of what someone has stated or written, giving only the main points, and in your own words.
Although, many student find summary written so difficult during examination. but in this post, I’m going to discuss some basic tips needed to write an effective and excellent summary.

Tip 1. Reading
You must firstly, read the content/passage at least twice before making an attempt to answer any question. So therefore, by doing so you are getting a clue on what the passage is talking about. It’s therefore important that you are able to understand the content of the passage. In other case the passage seems abstruse(difficult to comprehend/understand). This is one of the reasons why you have to read twice.

Tip 2. Sentence subject
Maintain the subject for each sentences. If you asked to state in 6 sentences summaries the.... You are to maintain the subject no matter what happens. For example, if you use “He” as the subject of the first sentence don’t try using “The man “ in the next sentence.
Tip 3. Tenses
Tenses matters most in effective summary writting. If the question is asked in present tense, don’t answer in past tense, For instance.
“He liked her mom so much.”
“He likes her mom so much.”
This is one of the reason while student fail when it comes to written an effective summary. However, you are to take note of the tense form to use while answering summary question.
Tip 4. Sentence arrangement
While written it’s important that you use “SVC” or “SVO” pattern. SVO: subject verb object. SVC: subject verb complement. Take a glance at the following examples.
“The man is a destitute(very poor)” ------ SVC pattern
“The man has no car” ------ SVO pattern
Tip 5. General Rules
- Avoid the use of conjunction like so, but, and or.
- Don’t copy directly from the passage.
- Avoid inclusion of extraneous material.
- Answer mustn’t be in phrase form.
- Take note of where you use punctuation.
- Take note of your spellings.
- Don’t use vocabularies wrongly, it doesn’t help.

A summary needs to be concise, clear to someone who hasn’t read the passage/content before. However, the main point must be brief, concise, and accurate. Moreover, specific details like date, figures should not be included unless it’s important.
